And while on the subject, I’ll play the hated Devil’s Advocate here.
Don’t hate on Dominic West. First of all, he’s an incredibly talented actor, and he played the leading role in a series which touched on a very sensitive subject. Not many actors can pull off that kind of a job, and I think he thoroughly deserved the award. The fact that he admitted himself that he believed Benedict would win scores him massive points in my eyes - he’s humbled and he accepted the award with dignity, so all the posts demanding “who the fuck is Dominic West” are completely unwarranted.
Secondly, if you think about it, Benedict is already so incredibly popular - the public cheered so much whenever his face appeared on screen and when he walked out to present the Special Award with Matt Smith.
Don’t hate me here, but giving him a BAFTA when he’s already so insanely popular, shooting high-budget mainstream films in America and making his way towards the Oscars (which he honestly is, just look at his talent!) would have been a bit unfair, in my honest opinion. He’s got an immense following, and an obvious advantage back at home and on international screens. He may as well have won that award.
Thirdly - and this is just me speculating - I think BAFTA simply wants to stir shit up. They nominated the three leading men of Sherlock’s cast two years in a row! Martin won last year, Andrew this year - I think it’s in part just a pretty sneaky advertisement ploy to build anticipation for the next year’s BAFTA, assuming of course, Benedict is nominated again next year (which I believe wholeheartedly he will be).
So be calm Tumblr. Lay down your virtual swords and don’t be hating Britain’s immense talent. Instead, thank them for our Lord, the Cumberbatch, our delicious villains and loyal companions, and the directors, writers, and producers who unwind us, tear out our hearts and throw them in the bitter flames of the Popular British Television.
And that’s just my little shpeal there, probably no one will read it. Quite rightly.
